Apple has started warning iPhone 5S users to grab the latest iOS update before November 3 or else they might not be able to use some of the functionalities including App Store, Email, etc. No, this isn’t because of any Apple masterplan to get iPhone 5S users to upgrade citing the fact that it was released more than six years ago. It is indeed due to a GPS rollover issue that will intercept all GPS-enabled products from Apple on November 3, 2019.
The reason is that GPS-enabled products have started going through GPS rollover issues starting as early as April 6, 2019, when it started hitting other manufacturers while Apple products m are estimated to hit by the same issue exactly at 12:00 UTC on November 6, 2019. Failing to upgrade to iOS 10.3.6 on iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, fourth-gen iPad (Wi-Fi and Cellular) would result is disruption is using some of the functionalities that include everything that requires GPS and timestamp such as email, iCloud, App Store, etc.
GPS location is of paramount importance to do several tasks. Once the users fail to update through respective Apple devices before November 3, they will have to restore and update their devices using Mac or PC because the OTA update that requires GPS location won’t be able to intercept those affected devices and they will be kept out of the loop.
iPhone 5/5S, fourth-gen iPad with Cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity are required to upgrade to iOS 10.3.4 to get the devices out of the affected devices list while those using iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3 among other devices will have to update their devices to the latest available iOS 9.3.6 to get rid of the GPS rollover issue that will affect their capability to surf the web, send emails or receive or use iCloud and other services.
Apple unveils users to iOS 13 on September 10 across all devices including iPhone 6S and later so these devices are left out of the loop. To check out the updates, go to Settings on your iPhone, tap on General >> About and check out the Software Version to confirm if it is the latest or not.
